Noorvik Students Learn Inupiaq

Martha Smith, an Inupiaq teacher, and Linda Sampson, an aide, worked with 21 Noorvik Kindergarten students today to teach students more about the Inupiaq language and culture. Martha had a freshly caught salmon that she used to teach the students Inupiaq words and what to do with the salmon.

KMHS Volleyball Tournament

The Lady Huskies had a great weekend of volleyball this weekend!

Scores were:

Kotzebue vs Nome 25-20, 21-25, 25-14, 25-21 (W 3-1)
Kotzebue vs. Hooper Bay 23-25, 25-11, 25-6, 25-7 (W 3-1)
Kotzebue vs. Barrow 25-17, 27-25, 21-25, 25-21 (W 3-1)

Barrow is most likely going to be some of our toughest competition in the region this year, so it was great to start the season by coming out and playing strong against them, especially considering this is our only home weekend of the season.

We won the first point of the match on a serious stuff block by Christina Fields, and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the match.  Senior setter Eryn Schaeffer came away with 27 assists during the mach, senior middle hitter Christina Fields recorded 20 kills, and senior outside hitter Chelsea Hadley had some awesome defense coming away with 19 digs.  Our libero, senior Colby Howarth, led the team in serve-receive passing, which was a huge key to our win.  Also notable was Danielle Fields who had 4 stuff blocks in the match; she is the only Freshman in the starting lineup.

Thanks to all who came and supported us this weekend!

Youth Leaders Program Receives Donation from Teck

Representatives from Teck Resource Limited and Teck Alaska Incorporated, the company that manages Red Dog Mine, visited the Northwest Arctic Borough School District in Kotzebue on Wednesday.  They donated $150,000 to the Youth Leaders Program, a suicide prevention and youth leadership program based in the Northwest Arctic schools.

The Youth Leaders program has been an integral part of the Northwest Arctic Borough School District for the past three years.  The temporary grant funding for the program was set to run out this year. “Their generous donation is keeping the program alive in the Northwest Arctic,” says Michelle Woods, the counselor in charge of the program.

Teck found out about the program through Jim Kulas, Red Dog Mine’s Environmental and Public Affairs Manager, who had heard of the Youth Leaders’ success from Tom Baker, a Kotzebue Youth Leader. Teck and Kulas recognized the importance of  supporting the program’s goals of youth leadership and suicide prevention.

The Northwest Arctic Borough School District thanks Teck for their generous donation to our Youth Leaders program.

2010 Inservice

Our 2010 Inservice was a great success!

Teachers and staff had fun visiting old friends and learning about new technologies. Teachers received training on our math, reading, and writing curriculum throughout the week. They also learned more about using and teaching with Macs in our one-to-one laptop initiative. With our new focus on broadening our curriculum, teachers spent time learning to incorporate art and drama into their classrooms.
