Health 110 Takes Flight
Students enrolled in the distance Health 110 class battled the elements to meet their teacher live in Fairbanks on the UAF campus. In addition to the extremely cold temps that awaited them, students were also exposed to the opportunities UAF has to offer including the Career and Technical College, Rural Student Services and Summer RAHI programs. Students braved the elements to meet fellow students from other parts of the State who are also taking part in this unique course. This course was chosen as it articulates into all the Allied Health programs UAF offers so that students are earning a much-needed credit to move forward in the health field. Although this is a distance course, students have the added support of having a certified here to help facilitate the class.

Students help with regional ice road data collection!
The ice road from Kotzebue to Noorvik is a welcome addition to the landscape in the winter months when many folks can find themselves feeling the onset of cabin fever. If funding and conditions allow the ice road offers affordable, comfortable, and quick escape from town. Equipped with an auger, SPOT GPS, and a fleet of snow machines and basket sleds, Rod Eakin's Hunting/Trapping/Survival class embarked on an afternoon trip to follow the route of the previous year's ice road. Their mission was to drill holes and record the location and ice thickness. That information would be used to inform the decision as to whether a road could be built again this year. If a road is built these students will also be able to feel proudknowing that they helped to connect the people of the NW Arctic.
Kivalina embraces CTE with drafting classesMcQueen School’s CTE Drafting teacher Mr. Fonger’s classes have learned the basics of drafting and are now putting their knowledge onto paper. The classes are taking a sketch of a house layout and are putting it onto paper, including scale and dimension. They are using their drawing boards to complete their work, along with the various tools to make all the angle and shapes. The class has learned about the various types of lines, measuring with an architect’s ruler and how to use the various tool in the drafting kit. The students have really enjoyed the class and are using their new acquired skills in their other classes as well.
