  • KHS Competes @ The Tsunami Bowl and Finish 7th

Tsunami Bowl 2012 Report Each year, about 20 teams come together in Seward to compete in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, regionally known as the Tsunami Bowl. When the teams arrive in Seward, they have already written a research paper, prepared an oral presentation (with a matching powerpoint!) and studied harder than slackers the day before finals. The paper and presentation together are worth 50% of the team score, while the quiz bowl portion is the other 50%.  The quiz bowl consists of head to head competition against other teams, where each team’s members have a buzzer.  Teams that buzz-in to answer the most questions, about oceanography related topics, win and advance through the brackets. There were 21 teams from all over Alaska competing this year. Some traveled across the state to attend, some walked across town to Seward High School, where the competition was hosted. Kotzebue sent Paulianne Schaeffer, China Kantner, Margy Norton, and Ember Eck (captain) to dominate the competition. The four ladies, accompanied by chaperones Lynn West and coach Lance Westing, presented on the importance of sheefish in the northwest arctic. Taking 6th overall for their project, and 13th in the quiz bowl, the ladies ended their first year of  competition by tying with two other teams for 7th place. And as always, having fun every step of the way. For more information Google “Tsunami Bowl”. Written by Ember Eck and Margy Norton, with a few details added by Coach Westing (Hopefully I didn’t make it boring!)

  • MS Boys B-ball Update

The boys have been practicing for about three weeks without any competition. January was rough on all our travel to the villages and unexpected events in Noatak pushed the middle school tournament back another week. Even though the boys had limited competition, we were ready for some games at the middle school tournament. On Thursday, I took 8 boys to Noatak: Colton Sieh, Seth Beaver, Travis Romane, Gary Eakin, Jason Payne, Spencer Woods, Louis Edenshaw, and Seth Roetman. The tournament bracket had our first game set up against Selawik. Colton Sieh as the point guard helped keep a pace towards victory. He had several key assists to Travis Romane. Travis offered the biggest push toward victory supporting 19 points, Gary and Seth Beaver had 8, Roetman had 4, and Colton rounded the game out with 3. Overall, it was a game that allowed us to correct any issues on the court. The second game of the tournament was set up against Point Hope. We were matched up well and competed very well. However, the final score was 51-47 in favor of Point Hope. The score is not the best part of the story. The best part of the game was how the boys found it inside themselves and fought back to get the score close. At half time we were down 33-17, a score spurred by Point Hope’s ability to hit any and all baskets thrown up. The boys came out at half and improved their defense considerably. We worked hard holding them to only 18 in the second half. Our baskets began to fall and we worked to within 2 points. Unfortunately, our team’s desire to shoot three pointers instead of working the ball down low got the best of us in the end. The loss to Point Hope put us in a rough situation. We would now have to win 4 straight games, three of which were going to be against Noorvik, Noatak, and probably Point Hope again. Friday’s only game was against Buckland. The height advantage allowed an easy win. It also gave Jason, Spencer, and Louis more playing time. They added an additional 8 baskets. Satu

  • Lady Husky Coaches Update

Last week, we hosted the Kotzebue Classic Tournament in Kotzebue: Thursday Kotzebue 57 Noorvik 15 Friday Kotzebue 64 Unalaska 28 Saturday Kotzebue 67 Point Hope 46 Thursday - Noorvik was playing without Kacie Sampson and Hannah Cleveland (injury) and we played stiff defense, limiting the Bears to 3 points in the first quarter, 11 at halftime and none in the second half. I thought Dessirea Kenworthy and Mary Sue Hyatt really stood out.  Dez had ten steals and Mary Sue was relentless with her on-ball defense and overall hard-nosed effort. Dez played fewer than 2 full quarters, but still finished with 23 points.  Colleen Snyder added 13 and nine different Lady Huskies found the scoring column.  Tingmaq Hailstone hit for a game-high 5 for Noorvik. Friday - Unalaska came out strong with Cassandra Morriestt starting the scoring with a 3-pointer and then hanging tough, trailing just 16-9 at halftime.  We then clamped down defensively and held the Lady Raiders to 2 points in the second quarter and was able to clear the bench for the last quarter and a half to get them good work for the second consecutive game. Colleen's five three-pointers stood out Friday.  She made five, but also shot an excellent percentage - it wasn't like it took her 15 shots to make five.  We were able to give Dez and Mary Sue a lot of rest, which is always a nice luxury because Dez is such a big part of what we do and she takes a pounding.  Mary Sue has been slowed by an injured foot that didn't heal properly after she broke a bone last summer and just has to play through the pain. Saturday - Point Hope jumped out to 19-13 lead after the first quarter, exploiting our press off the dribble a couple of times for easy scores.  But we answered with a big second quarter to take a 30-26 lead into halftime.  From there, a 19-6 third quarter run provided the first breathing room of the game and we extended to a 67-46 final score. I thought Point Hope was tremendous.  They are skilled, are well coac

  • KHS Sweet Heart Dance

New York and Los Angeles may be known for the high class gala, but they can't hold a candle to Kotzebue when our high school puts on a soiree'. Saturday February 18th the Junior class hosted the Sweetheart Dance. Included on the guest list were Kotzebue students and visiting basketball teams from Unalaska, Point Hope and Noorvik.    The theme was "Sweet" with candy colors through out the Commons with balloons and cupcake decorations providing a delighful accent.  Flowing fountains of punch provided refeshment to the parched dancers and a delicious array of yummy candies and cupcakes designed to impress provided a sugary repast. Our young ladies in their pretty dresses and our handsome guys outshone any celebrity guest list.  It was a general consensus that the event was a huge success and that a good time was had by all.    When representatives from the junior class were asked to comment on the upcoming Prom this reporter was told "You ain't seen nothing yet!"

  • Lady Husky Coaches Update

This past weekend the Kotzebue Lady Huskies traveled to Valdez for the Elks Tournament and the junior varsity girls traveled to the Selawik Valley Tournament. The varsity team opened play against Nikiski. We were predictably rusty after a 2.5 week layoff, but outscored the Bulldogs 19-2 in the second quarter to put the game away. Dessirea led the team in steals and scoring with 15 points, Colleen hit 4 3-pointers and finished with 14. The win advanced us to the semi-finals vs. Valdez. The Bucs have good size and a tremendous point guard. One publication has them ranked #1 in the state this week, another has them 3rd. We controlled the first half, leading the entire way, but more importantly, controlled tempo and I felt in control of the game. However, Alex Derifield, their point guard, hit a third quarter buzzer-beater to tie the game and seemed to shift momentum. We ended up losing by six, but in hindsight, it took an awful lot for us to lose the game. We were out-rebounded nearly 3-1 and shot just 1-6 from the free throw in the final quarter. We also shot a very poor percentage from beyond the arc - much of which I credit to the job Derifield did in defending Colleen. She face-guarded her the entire game and didn't give her much room at all with which to work. The loss sent us to the third place game against Barrow. I felt we were prepared and confident heading into the game, led early and looked to be in good shape. However, they hit back-to-back 3's to close out the half and extend what had been a even game into an 8 point lead. In a game where scoring against a 6'3" post player (with a wingspan of at least 7 feet) is extremely difficult, I felt those scores on back-to-back possessions were back-breakers. Offensively in the second-half, we bogged down and lacked any type of continuity. With our point guard being our primary scoring threat, I felt we got overly reliant on her and ended up doing too much standing and watching - making us both eas

  • Husky B-ball Coaches Update

Good morning Parents, I would like to update you on the past two weeks of boys basketball. On January 12-14 we participated in Tri-Valley's seven team double elimination tournament. In our first game on Thursday night we defeated Lathorp's JV 51-47 which advanced us to a semi-final matchup versus Su-Valley. Against Su-Valley we found it very difficult to score on the interior versus their 6'7" mountain man center. Each time we would break through their perimeter defense and penetrate their interior our players would run into the 6'7" defender who would block or alter our shots. Although we played good defense holding Su-Valley to only 38 points we could only score 29 oursleves resulting in a low scoring 38-29 defeat for us. The loss to Su-Valley dropped us into the loser bracket versus Lathrop's JV who had worked their way back through the loser bracket. In our second matchup with Lathrop we trailed by 9 points with four minutes remaining and the pace of the game was such that it just didn't feel like we would be able to come back and win. At that point we decided to go for broke and start applying heavy preassure in the halfcourt and press in the full court which resulted in totally changing the momentum of the game. We went from being 9 down with four minutes remaining to overtaking Lathrop and winning by 8 points. It was a fine display of determination and courage shown by our players. The 35-27 victory over Lathrop advanced us into the championship game versus our previous foe, Su-Valley. Unfortunately we were not able to revenge our previous loss to Su-Valley however, they defeated us in another very low scoring affair, 30-21. As a team we were awarded the tournament's second place trophy, Peter Jones was selected as the tournaments outstanding player and Colton Jessup was selected to the all-tournament team. After the championship game we loaded our gear into two vehicles and drove to Fairbanks to connect with our Monday morning flight to Galena. Our Monday

  • Lady Huskies Basketball Update

The Lady Huskies traveled to Dillingham this weekend with varsity and JV for games Friday and Saturday. We got off to a nice start Friday with the JV winning a back and forth game 54-48. Paige McConnell hit for a game high 21 - also extending her career high of 18 she set earlier in the week vs. Galena. Tiffany Avery scored double-figures with 11 and made some really nice passes as well. Serena Williams knocked down a personal best 8 points, Magdaline Booth added 6, Zeanna Savok had 5 Paeton Schaeffer 2 and Kwang Leedy added a free throw. In the varsity game, Dessirea Kenworthy and Mary Sue Hyatt each picked up 3 fouls in the first three minutes and an 8-3 lead gave way. Colleen Snyder stepped up and knocked down some big shots for us, cutting the Dillingham lead to 2 just before halftime, but in the second half, the fouls and short bench caught up to us. We trailed by the 11 at the end of the 3rd, before the wheels came off in the fourth and we ended up falling 54-32. Saturday's JV game was just as competitive, with our girls racing out to a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. Dillingham retook a 21-19 lead at the half before outscoring us 19-4 in the third quarter. We then went on a 18-6 run to close the game and had 5 shots from the field to win and several other free throw opportunities in the closing seconds, but could get anything to drop in the 44-43 loss. On a sour note, we lost Tiffany Avery to a knee injury that will sideline her for 3-4 weeks. In the varsity game, we stayed out of foul trouble for the most part and played both harder and smarter. We ended up winning by 10, with Dessirea hitting for a career high 34 points. Colleen was big once again with 4 3's and 14 total points. Mary Sue and Alysha also found the scoring column in the win. Our junior varsity is scheduled to travel to Noorvik this weekend for the NIT Tournament. The varsity is off and has one schedule change as well - we have dropped out of the Dimond Tournament. • MS Boys B-ball Coaches Update

Hello Husky Basketball Fans, This week the boys middle school team traveled to Noorvik to challenge the Bears on their home court. We took 8 boys and they had a great time. The first game the boys played really tough and improvements were noted to be made. After a encouraging pep talk the boys went back onto the court in the fourth quarter and rallied over the bears to win 36-34. The boys have begun to recapture the skills they have previously learned, however after only two weeks of practice more time will need to be spent on fundamental skills and teamwork. Saturdays game unfortunately ended in favor of the bears. We were required to use a woman's ball and the boys were not prepared or conditioned to the lighter ball. The game was considerably closer than the final score resembles and this is due to Noorvik making a majority of their bonus free throws. Overall the final score was 38-32. The boys learned some important lessons by playing away from the great home crowd in Kotzebue. Thanks for the support Coach Richards and Coach Frost

  • MS Girls B-ball Coaches Update

Good evening parents, friends, supporters: Here we are in to the end of week 2 of Middle School girls basketball and I am so impressed with the progress these girls are making. First I want to highlight that all of the girls made a SUPER turn around with their grades.  We had next to none when it came to eligibility problems this last week.  All of the girls have shown that they worked hard in changing their grades and getting that school work done!   We, as coaches, were super impressed with this change and appreciate the girls’ hard work in doing their work and the parents and supporters that helped to ensure the girls made those changes. THANK YOU!!   Let’s keep that up through the rest of the season and school year! With the increased eligibility came increased numbers in girls that were able to play this last weekend.  We began the weekend with only one game, but seeing the numbers that I had to work with, I appreciated KMHS administration letting us get an intersquad game in for most of the girls.  The more court time we can get for every girl is really important and I’ll continue to work towards that.   This week in practice we continue to work on basic basketball fundamentals like dribbling, passing and defense.  Each practice we add a new element to every skill and increase the girls’ abilities with that ball.  We work on structure with the plays and opening our eyes on defense while continuing to get quicker.  All of these skills and hard work from the girls showed in this weekend’s games.  We really talked with the girls about setting up the offense and spreading out the floor.  We still have a lot of work with keeping our eyes on the goal and squaring up our bodies to the basket.  We’ll work hard on that in the next coming weeks.  I was absolutely impressed with our defense and the girls movement around the court and sticking with their man.  They are moving their feet a lot more and keeping their eyes open on help D and the ball.   Just a quick not

Last week's update is a couple of days late to accommodate for the off-weekend and then Monday/Tuesday games. We played Galena Monday/Tuesday in a rare mid-week series, because neither school had a common open weekend this season. Galena was a very well-coached team and featured University of Alaska Anchorage commit Jenna Buchanan. Jenna was every bit as good as advertised at both ends of the floor. In Friday's game, despite missing Diane Nelson, who is still out with a broken bone in her foot and Stephanie Sampson, who received 7 stitches after a kitchen accident, we took a 12 point lead with about 4:00 left in the first half. However, we then seemed to hit a wall physically and allowed them to cut the lead to 4 at halftime. Galena pulled out to a 10 point lead in the second half, but we cut it to 4 with 2:00 to play, before being forced to foul and the Hawks were clutch at the free throw line and were able to extend to a 9 point win. Dessirea, who played while sick on Friday, had to be admitted to the hospital Friday evening and was not available for Saturday's game. The attrition finally caught up to us and without 3 projected starters available to play, Saturday's game got away from us early, with Galena racing out to a 9-0 start that we were never able to threaten. Some bright spots from the weekend were Dez's effort Friday. While nursing a bad head cold, she was nearly able to match Buchanan point for point, finishing with 19 for the game, just one point shy of Jenna's total. Colleen Snyder hit three three pointers and finished with 15 points. Saturday's highlight was the JV team's come from behind win. Paige McConnell hit for game (and career) high with 18 points. This weekend varsity and jv are scheduled to travel to Dillingham. The Wolverines are 5-0 so far this season, but have yet to play a region opponant.

  • MS Girls B-Ball Coaches Update

Good day Parents, grand parents and supporters!!! This email group has been set up for the Middle School girls basketball team updates and contacts.  I’ll be doing my best to send weekly updates on the progress of our team.  Feel free to use this as a good contact email for myself for any questions about the team or needs for your daughter. (if you wish to be taken off this list...please reply and let me know) So last week was the first full week of practice for our team which ended in a great set of practice games for them.  As I mentioned in the initial letter sent home with the girls, the season runs on very last minute travel or game schedules, so I appreciated everyone understanding and patience last weekend.  We were hoping for some games against some visiting teams but because of cold weather, last minute changes were made but I am very grateful to the KMHS administration for allowing us to play intersquad games. In our first week of practice we focused a lot on basic basketball skills.  I wanted the girls to move slowly in back in to basketball by remembering the basic fundamentals like dribbling, defensive stances and movement, lay ups, passing, etc.  Once we had the announcement that there were going to be games it was a quick move in to higher levels of learning plays and defense.  The girls did great adjusting.  I think it was important for us to start with the basics so that we could get an even slate of play for all the girls.  This will allow us to get a platform built for the girls for the higher level of play that we will grow in to throughout the season. Last week we also did a lot of conditioning... I think the girls felt good about the pace we built for them, but after seeing them work so hard this weekend in the games, I see we have some work a head of us.  We will continue to build on our conditioning and physical movements so that they can handle full length games but also focus on their skills.  It’s really important, and I ask for you

  • Husky Basketball Update

Good morning Parents, This past weekend the Husky Boys won the Husky Shootout by defeating Selawik 65-46, Noorvik 77-74 and Buckland 63-61. The Noorvik and Buckland games were hard fought contests that could have gone either way however the Husky boys hard play and perserverance allowed them to emerge victories in both contests. Both as a player and coach, the Buckland contest was on of the most improbable victories I have ever been involved in. We were down by one point with .09 seconds on the clock and Buckland had the ball out of bounds on their end of the court. Buckland's inbound pass was deflected by Husky defender, Peter Jones, which caused the ball to fall short of its intended target so that Husky guard, Josh Tallon, could intercept the pass and take a final shot. Josh's jumper from 30 feet hit nothing but net giving the Husky boys a miraculous two point victory. It had been seven years since the Kotzebue boys last won the Husky Shootout and this team did it in grand style on Saturday night. The fans appeared to throughly enjoy the drama filled semi-final versus Noorvik and championship game versus Buckland. Four of our boys were selected to the all tournament team: Peter Jones, Josh Tallon, Colton Jessup and Grant Magdanz. All four were very deserving of their all-tournament selection. To date I am very pleased with our development, both individually and as a team. Even before we won the Husky Shootout I was feeling good about our progress. This group of boys are hard workers, they are very coachable and they are respectful young men. They have been a joy to coach these past six weeks. In my 25+ years of coaching I'm not sure I have ever coached a team that is more receptive to being coached. As parents I want to thank you for your help in our success. Many of you have made sacrafices in your lives in order to accomodate your son's participation on the team. Your efforts are recognized and appreciated. I especially appreciate those of you that communica

  • HUSKY BASKETBALL UPDATE

Good afternoon, This weekend the Husky boys will be playing their first games of the season in the Husky Shootout, December 29, 30 & 31. The boys have been practicing hard for the past four weeks and they are all looking foward to putting that practice to the test this weekend. This is a good group of boys, they are hard workers and are very respectful young men. My goal as their coach is to help them develop their individual skills and to incorporate those skills into the team structure so that their strengths are maximized and their weaknesses are minimized. Their improvement to this point has been significant. I have been impressed with their willingness to learn, their work ethic and their individual and team development. Our goal each game will be to play smarter and harder than our opponents. On Wednesday (Dec. 28) at 5:15 pm there will a breif parent meeting to discuss district and Alaska School Acitvities Association requirements for student participation. The team will practice from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Wednesday so I would suggest gathering in the gym at 5:00 pm or shortly thereafter and we will move into a classroom for the 5:15 pm meeting. Gerty Gallahorn is organizing the hospitality room for the upcoming Husky Shootout. Typically the boys and girls teams split the responsibility of hosting the hospitality room during the three day tournament. If you are available to participate in helping host the hospitality room please contact Gerty at 360-6916.

  • Kotzebue Wrestlers win 11th straight

Dear Husky Wrestling Parents and Supporters: This past weekend the Huskies competed at the Northern Conference Wrestling Tournament in Nome, Ak.  The Huskies wrestled really well and brought home the Regional title for the 11th consecutive year in a row, and 15th overall. The Huskies out pointed the Nome Nanooks by 82pts to win the Title.  The Huskies put 11 wrestlers in the finals, and took 6 individual championships home. Five wrestlers took 2nd, and four placed 3rd.  All wrestlers placing in the top three punched their ticket to the state tournament.  This is the best we have wrestled this season.  Many of these young men had big break throughs this weekend. The boys were focused, relaxed, and warriors every time they stepped on the mat.  The conditioning really shined in some pivotal matches and the technique along with self determination won many matches for us at the Regional Tournament.  This is a great way for us to  head into the state tournament coming up this weekend in Nikiski, AK.  I look for us to be one of the top teams at the State Tournament and bring home many state placers, and Individual  State Champions.
