Native Youth Olympics

NYO was originated in 1972 providing insight into Alaska's rich cultural heritage, while promoting heathy lifestyles. The events at are based on games and life skills of past generations of Alaska natives to test their hunting and surviving skills and to increase strength, endurance, agility, and the balance of mind and body. The event has grown from to include more than 49 participating schools. The events are The Alaskan Stick Pull, which is a game of strength; The Scissor Broad Jump, which develop the balance and reflexes; The Wrist Carry, which is a test of survival; The One-Hand Reach, which to test a person's control over their body; The Armpull, which is game for fun and excitement; The Kneel Jump, similar to the Scissor Broad Jump; The Alaskan High Kick, which to test of both the mind and body working together to maintain control; and The Seal Hop, which is a game of sheer endurance.
