    Activity:

    Read Willie Hensley's Article "Why the Natives of Alaska Have a Land Claim." As you read, keep in mind all of the reasons he gives for Native land claims. You should be able to identify at least four. When you are finished, complete the discussion questions below and submit to your instructor.

    Questions for Review and Discussion:

    What are some of the reasons Hensley discusses for Native land claims and why are they important?

    1. Discuss the effects that people of Western culture have had upon Alaskan Natives.
    2. Hensley discusses three proposals in his paper. What did each of these proposals provide for in the areas of land, money, supervision and protection?

    BONUS:

    Interview an elder in your community about life when they were young. Pay particular attention to the influence that outsiders had on his/her community back then. Compare that with life in your village today. How have things changed?
