TRAINING PROGRAMS
PROGRAM INFORMATION, METHOD, AND SCHEDULE/COSTS
Training Methods
The Alaska Technical Center has created a learning and training
center, which is intended to provide all students with technical
knowledge, hands-on experience and practical employment preparation
so that they are prepared for the workplace in their career choice(s).
It is ATC’s philosophy that embraces the belief that our institution
provides the best instruction to meet the needs and demands of each
student.
All ATC programs are competency-based, with a written list of occupational
skills that students must complete prior to receiving a Certificate
of Completion. Student progress reports are submitted monthly by
the instructor. Student’s sense of accomplishment and self-confidence
is nurtured through the issuance of a skill-mastery list for each
program rather than a letter grade. A Skills Card is used to indicate
the level of proficiency the student has mastered in a particular
skill in his/her trade.
Program Selection
ATC, in keeping with the current philosophy of vocational and technical
education, offers programs in occupational fields that have been
identified for their potential employment opportunity for our students.
With the constant changes in employment needs and demands, the programs
offered by ATC may reflect these changes on a yearly bases. Please
check with the ATC Office of Admissions for any recent program changes.
ATC program duration is between seven (7) and thirty-two (32) weeks
in length. For specific information, refer to the specific program
listings in this catalog or call the ATC Admissions Office.
Daily Schedule
Unlike high school or college classes, ATC programs are set up in
such a fashion to offer “real world” training. ATC classes
are taught from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm each day, with two coffee breaks,
and a one-hour break for lunch. This entails a 35-hour school work
week for students. All students are required to clock-in each day
with an actual time clock. Top students are nominated each month
by their peers and instructors as candidates for the honor of “Student
of the Month”. Each student of the month is awarded a certificate,
an ATC jacket, and an ATC mug.
