Hundreds of years ago, Kiana was settled as the main village of the Kobuk rivers Kowagmiut Iñupiat Eskimos. It became the supply center for mines along the Squirrel River in 1909. There are approximately 400 people in Kiana, of which 36 are Elders. Kiana is 60 miles East of Kotzebue. Kiana's Inupiaq name is Katyaaq, which means, a place where three rivers meet.”
