To ensure a unified District-wide mastery standard assessment procedure and to effectively score, document, and organize results, the Mastery Standards Assessment Binders and Student Progress Monitoring Folder/Binders have been developed. Continuous mastery assessment and scoring guide improvement will be made as document suggestions are addressed.

These Mastery Standard assessments and scoring guides represent a key component of the District-wide restructuring framework named Guided Learning. The Mastery Standards assessment will guide educators toward modifying and improving instructional techniques to meet student mastery achievement. Mastery achievement is the scoring guide measured trait of proficient and/or advanced. Resultant assessment data are then used to drive instruction toward expediting student movement from one benchmark level to another.

Guided Learning
Guided Learning, the underlying framework for Northwest Arctic Borough School District student instruction and assessment is a new way for students to learn and be promoted through school. Guided Learning manifests as District restructuring evolves replacing the graded system of K-12 where students are grouped by age to benchmarks based on performance standards. Learning and achievement replaces promotion by age. Furthermore, State and District Performance Standards in math, reading, and writing for Primary, Intermediate, and Middle levels are taught and assessed for mastery to ensure that students know and are able to do what is expected at each of the five benchmark levels.
