The Kobuk Middle School students are published authors!

Teacher Ms. Harken reported that Kobuk students recently completed and published books using a website called Bookemon.com for their writing class. Their books are written in a combination of English and Inupiaq languages and showcase some of the Inupiaq vocabulary they have learned through their Inupiaq course taught by Lena Tickett. The students enjoyed writing and creating their books online and look forward to seeing them in print. They worked really hard on this project and would like to share their books with the school district, please visit www.bookemon.com and type in Inupiaq in the search box to read their books.  The titles include, The Pinasrut Tuttut by Samantha Horner and Makayla Ward, The Hungry Wolf Pack by Angline Custer and Inupiaq Food by Ally Schaeffer and Blanche Sun, Arctic Animals by Peter Garfield and William Gooden, Igliguan Riders by Dustin Harvey and Henry Garfield.

NWABSD students and staff participate in the 2013 Choose Respect Day!
Across the region, students and staff joined community residents and state visitors as they held rallies and marches in villages on March 28, 2013.  As part of Governor Sean Parnell's Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence prevention campaign,  schools made time to bring awareness to these important issues and emphasize respect within their schools and communities.

Noatak and Kotzebue Schools take part in North of Sixty Project
Kotzebue and Noatak Schools were visited by Jeni Henrickson and Matt Koivula from the Learning Technologies Media Lab at the University of Minnesota Feb. 3-8.  Jeni and Matt visited with students, staff and community members and learned about the district's curriculum technology initiatives, distance education programs and cultural integration in our schools.  The North of Sixty° project is a collaboration with classrooms from around the circumpolar Arctic, including schools in Russia, Norway, Canada, Finland, and the USA.  Our students contributed not only to a tapestry of world knowledge about the Arctic and their individual communities, but also enhanced world knowledge about climate change by sharing the human, or social sciences, impacts beyond the scientific data and known impacts to the natural world.
