Mr. Steve Cunningham

I am from Northern Idaho where I graduated from University of Idaho with a degree in Secondary Education (Social Studies).  I began my teaching career in Alaska ten years ago at Soldotna Middle School teaching World and US History in 2007.  in 2010, I went to Utqiagvik and taught one year at Hopson Middle School.  While in Barrow, I attended Ilisagvik College and complete 12 semester hours in Inupiaq grammar and conversational Inupiaq.

After I left Barrow, I enrolled in the Special Education certificate program at UAA.  I completed my practicum at Kenny Lake School in Copper River School District while serving as the PK-12 SpEd Teacher.  I also led the Title One, Title Seven (Indian Ed) and 504 programs.  I taught Economics, US History, PE, Exploratory, and Government while fulfilling my duties as a SpEd Teacher.  I also led a cross-country skiing groups and coordinated the Special Olympics Valdez - Glennallen games while at Kenny Lake.

I went back to Soldotna in 2015 to be the Read 180 teacher and Reading Resource teacher.  I taught two years before coming to NW Arctic at Kobuk School in 2017.

I am also a US Navy veteran having served between 1984-1989 on board the USS Ajax, where I was able to sail the Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as the Persian Gulf.  I have worked at a variety of jobs in my life as well as owning and operating a business and home cleaning business and managing a water system for 200 members.

I love the outdoors and subsistence lifestyle.  I also love the Inupiat Culture and language and I always find ways to educate my students about their own culture and language.

I am married to a wonderful lady named Christy, and I have two grown sons from a previous marriage, Cyrus (US Navy and Defense Intelligence Agency stationed in Saudi) and Vincent (attending college in Texas).

I love the NW Arctic and the beautiful and friendly village of Kobuk (Laugviik) and am excited about being here again for my second year.
