Reading is Fundamental
Goal: 80% or more JNES students will improve their DIBELS composite score by at least one proficiency level by the end of the year.
What will JNES do to help students learn to read?
- Provide excellent reading instruction to all students every day
- Provide extra reading intervention in the classroom for students who need more support
- Provide before and after school tutoring opportunities to help struggling readers
- Provide a summer reading program to encourage reading outside of the school year
- Provide incentives and celebrations for students who meet or exceed their reading goals and help students monitor their own progress
What are some things families can do to help their children learn to read more fluently?
- Read together 5 days a week for 15-30 minutes or more. When children are reading, make sure that the book is easy enough that they can read almost all the words on the page.
- Reread books that your children enjoy. Rereading builds fluency and confidence.
- Take free books from school or check out books from the Chukchi Library with your children.
- Make family reading time fun and special for your child by turning off all the screens.
- Talk about books or other things you've read.
- Listen to audiobooks.
- Help your child be more aware of print in their surroundings: read signs, labels, and product packaging.
- Take books with you to camp, on planes, and car trips.
- Let your children see you reading and writing for pleasure.
- Get enough rest, eat nutritious foods, and live an active lifestyle.
