Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Dr. Deborah Lancaster
The Northwest Arctic Borough School District is proud to welcome Dr. Deborah (Debbe) Lancaster as our new Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Though new to NWABSD, Dr. Lancaster brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and heart to our district.
Dr. Lancaster began her journey in education in 2000 after a successful career in healthcare, where she owned and operated a private practice and physical rehabilitation clinic in Central Texas. Inspired to make a difference in a new way, she sold her practice and stepped into the classroom as a science teacher—where she met and later married fellow science educator Michael Lancaster.
In 2009, Debbe and Michael made the move to Alaska in search of adventure and a deeper connection with rural education. Since then, she has served in various roles, including teacher, principal, and superintendent, completing her advanced degrees through the University of Alaska Southeast. Despite her leadership positions, Debbe remains a teacher at heart, grounded in her belief in the power of relationships and high-quality instruction.
Dr. Lancaster brings more than two decades of educational expertise, along with a deep commitment to culturally responsive, student-centered learning. She is especially passionate about ensuring that curriculum and instruction reflect the values, voices, and potential of the communities we serve.
When she’s not working, Debbe enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren who live across Alaska, Texas, Minnesota, and Montana. She and her family love traveling and exploring new places together.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Lancaster to NWABSD—we are excited for the experience and heart she brings to our team and to the students and families of our region.
