Leading the way through a quality CTE program:
Aligning to our mission "To provide a learning environment that inspires and challenges students and employees to excel." NWABSD is committed to providing a quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) program for all of our students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) is not just another name for vocational education. While CTE stands upon the rich history of vocational education, it has adapted and evolved into a program that prepares students through an integration of academic and technical skills, knowledge and training needed to be successful along a chosen career pathway. In addition; studies support that students enrolled in CTE courses are more likely to graduate. Utilizing a curriculum built on a hands-on contextual learning model, CTE allows our students to graduate with the skills and knowledge they need to be productive citizens. By connecting work-place competencies and core academic content; learning is made more accessible and relevant to our students. But most importantly; CTE gives our students choices that allow them to tie what they are learning in school with their career goals, aspirations, post-secondary plans, and future dreams.
Here in the NWABSD, our CTE courses are aligned to one of six career pathways chosen to meet future local employment needs at Manillaq, Red Dog Mine, the school district, NANA, and other community stakeholders. Students here are afforded the opportunity to enroll in industry based CTE courses that support their Personal Learning & Career Plans which includes career goals, a course inventory, assessment scores, career exploration, training, certifications, job experience, and post-secondary transitions. Upon graduation, students have the ability to continue their PLCPs at local post-secondary institutions such as the Star of the Northwest Magnet School, Alaska Technical Center or Chukchi Regional Campus; as well as, apprenticeship programs offered at both Red Dog Mine, NANA and Maniilaq Association.
