Buckland is located on the banks of the Buckland River, approximately 75 miles south of Kotzebue and 40 miles below the Arctic Circle. The population is currently about 550. This community is comprised mostly of Inupiaq Eskimos who still live a subsistence lifestyle. The Buckland River provides the locals with a steady supply of fish. A caribou herd remains near the village almost all year long. The current school was built in 2002.
