Located on the banks of the Kobuk River, Shungnak is 10 miles from Kobuk and 150 miles from Kotzebue. The area is abundant in large and small game, and residents rely on the natural resources to maintain a subsistence lifestyle. The school provides services to about 86 students, of whom 95% are Alaska Natives. A staff of 7 teachers cover academic courses and provide academic and nonacademic extracurricular activities.
